I've had an account with Fidelity since I was in college. I have been very pleased with the service I've recieved. I get a statment every quarter and never get a call trying to sell me stock or mutual funds I don't want. If you want a place to put some money and let it sit this would be my first choice.
I can't comment on the trading, because I don't use them for that. I have an IRA that I started with my graduation money from high school. So at this point I'd still be paying the $19.95 rate because I use my company's 401K which has an account through a different company. So I refuse to pay that much when I can trade for free at other places.
Fidelity also offers CD that are fee free, that is also another way to go. Although I have a way to go before retirement I own a couple of CD that I use for upcoming expenses.
