Scottrade is generally a good company. They have a clean website, and a really nice user interface. They have Gainskeeper (keeps track of what you have made/lost) which is a really sweet feature. My major...only real problem with Scottrade is their price, and their minimum. Faced with Scottrades $7 trades, or Zecco's $0, Zecco is the obvious choice. Same with their account minimum.
On the plus side, another great thing about Scottrade is their fee free IRAs. That is one thing that they do better then Zecco. Zecco's cost $35 per year.
Scottrade does a wonderful job for stock research, providing both S&P PDFs, and Reuters. If you feel that you aren’t as skilled a trader as your buddy at work, don’t worry, because Scottrade takes care of all of that.
So, if you want a more mature platform for trading, and don't care about paying $7 every time you trade, then Scottrade would be a great choice.
