Lowtrades is an online subsidiary of Success Trades Securities. They launched their online stock trading platform in 1999, with the goal of catering to self-directed retail investors. Their philosophy is that since so much free research resources are available on the Internet, they focus on cheap, solid transactions, and let traders handle the rest for themselves.

Lowtrades Services

True to their stated philosophy, Lowtrades is a no-frills operation. Research resources are limited. Mutual funds are available, but must be placed through a broker, and cost $25.00 a trade. Other broker-assisted trades are $25.00 as well. Pretty much everything else carries a flat commission of $4.95, with a $.60-per-contract fee for options trades.

Traders can get access to Level II access for a monthly fee. $9.95 per month gets you quotes. $13.95 gets you quotes and time/sales. Extended hours trading is also available.

Lowtrades Reviews in the Media

Lowtrades media reviews have been thin. Users have praised their low commissions. Penny stock traders in particular link their flat structure. Their customer service has been called slow and unresponsive, though, and there have been reports of long delays in processing paperwork.

Downsides to Consider

There service offerings are very thin, and there are some hefty fees for requesting anything outside the basic core of functions. This includes annoying custodial and set-up fees for IRA accounts, inactivity fees, dividend reinvestment fees, and fees for 1099 requests.

Bottom Line

Lowtrades is a good value if you stick to the very basics, but there are other brokers that offer the same or better commissions while providing a much broader array of services, and charging fewer miscellaneous fees. We recommend that anyone considering Lowtrades look at Zecco.com or TradeKing.com, instead.
