E*Trade's online application is OK, but if you think you are going to need more than that or want to learn options, go with THINK OR SWIM. The E*Trade Pro desktop application is not intuitive or explained. Also, if you have less than 25K, you can not sell and get your money until FOUR WORKING DAYS. They also charge you $99.00/3 months if you don't make THIRTY TRADES during that time. Also, I have found their customer service to be incompetent. With the THINK OR SWIM application, you can use "fake money" until you are ready for the real thing, and IT'S FREE. I think E*Trade uses lots of dirty little tricks to make some quick $$ before you QUIT and go somewhere else. Forewarned is forearmed.

I found out a stock I sold this am at the opening sold almost 10% BELOW the low for the day. I checked and rechecked on several sites. I think Scottrade has its own version of lows and one should protect themselves from getting ripped of by placing only stops or limits. When I called they consulted the trading desk and told me it was a "good" trade. It surely was good for them but Bad for me.

A company with a solid platform fills are fast and with good customer support.

Best broker out there. Very nice education department and their ECN MT4 works great.

I was having a problem getting my assets transfered to TOS from another on line broker. After discussing the problem with the support guy, he directed me to talk to one of the founders of TOS. With a day I talked to the CFO of the company, wbeeptook my problem very seriously. They know how to take care of their customers. They may not be the cheapest trade around, but they have great support and a great trading platform.

If you keep $50K or more, ETrade is very good. Their checking account is free and better than most (free checks, free ATM usage at any ATM including refunding other bank's fees, email check image depositing). Their $9.99 transaction fee is a little high, but for investors (as opposed to traders) wbeepreally cares. Fast problem resolution and good clearing. I have been with them for about 7 years and they now have the bulk of my banking business.

TOS is by far the best firm out there. No comparison AAAAAAAAAA++++++++

Scottrade has for the second time changed their requirements on margin for ETF's. This has and can put one in a most untenable position if the market is not in your favor at the time. I should have cancelled and closed the account the first time, but was waiting for a more opportune time. The second raise in margin call has forced me to close the account with an untimely and uncalled for loss.

I use two brokers. TD is one. They have an excellent quote and order execution system. Their interest on cash balances is my one big gripe. Another gripe is that they charge $25.00 to execute a T-bill auction order. My other broker does not charge anything for that. They provide up to the minute quotes on pink sheet stocks. My other broker does not for which I have complained to them. Their research is somewhat on the pathetic side. But what can you expect for $10.00. Personally, I think it is a mistake to have just one broker. The pluses of one offset the minuses of another. I have been thinking of adding a 3rd.

I joined ShareBuilder about 9 months ago. I found the incentives worthwhile and referred 5 people, only two joined. I got a $50 signon bonus. The stock finder search engine was awesome, but they do not carry many stocks you find in the search engine, especially penny stocks.
I bought a lot of stocks through them and have found they dropped many stocks I carry, and now all I carry have been dropped.

My advice, take the frills, drop them and go on to another broker.
Funny, I remember someone else writing the same thing before I joined.
