Information About TD Waterhouse, Now Known As TD Ameritrade
TD Waterhouse, best known for its TV ads featuring Sam Waterston of Law and Order, merged in 2006 with online brokerage Ameritrade. The combined brokerage was named
TD Ameritrade.
Ameritrade was originally founded in 1975. Its original name was Omaha First Securities. It launched its online brokerage service in the 90s, and has since made several acquisitions, including former online brokerage Datek.
In 2006, Ameritrade bought out TDWaterhouse for approximately $2.5 billion, and then went about combining its principally online operations with the more service-oriented offerings TD Waterhouse provided. After the merger, the company has over 6 million customers, with over $250 billion under management. They execute over 232,000 trades every day, making the new TD Ameritrade one of the largest and most active brokers on the Internet.
